My Story

Mediator & Civil Rights Advocate

John Devlin

I have seen all perspectives in the civil justice system – the plaintiff, the defense, and the court – in a career that spans more than three decades.  I serve as a mediator because I enjoy using those experiences to help parties resolve their disputes.  I also represent individuals in complex civil rights litigation, primarily for the families of people who have died in custody or for children who have experienced abuse in the foster care system.  Whether mediating cases or fighting for justice, I am committed to fairness, accountability, and the pursuit of human rights.  I strive to treat everyone with respect and dignity.

Mediation

I bring decades of courtroom experience to my mediation practice. I also use mindfulness skills, such as active listening, to help the parties move toward resolution. Mediation allows the parties to control the result, reducing costs and uncertainty. I mediate all types of civil cases, including motor vehicle, employment, and professional negligence, in person throughout Oregon or by Zoom.

Civil Rights Cases

The civil justice system is a powerful tool for holding institutions accountable and promoting positive change. I handle cases involving inadequate medical care in jails and prisons, often against state and local governments or for-profit contractors. I also bring cases against the Oregon Department of Human Services on behalf of children who have experienced abuse in the foster care system.

Mindfulness for Lawyers

Mindfulness is a powerful tool for coping with the stress and pressure of legal practice. I teach simple techniques to improve focus, resilience, and well-being. I offer CLE workshops and presentations for legal groups, helping attorneys integrate mindfulness into their life and their legal practice. Even a few minutes a day can transform how we work and live.
